We are a completely independent Shotokan school. Our doors are open to anyone regardless of political affiliation. Just stop by, be respectful of our ways, and enjoy the workout. Owner/operator Sensei Robert McDonough lives in Rancho Santa Margarita and started his Dojo here a little over ten years ago. Being a calculus tutor to put himself through college and a life time Martial Artist, Mr.McDonough has been able to combine his skills to teach Karate. Sensei has studied Karate and competed all over the world. Not only in Japan, where he still continues his training, but also in Italy, France, Hungary, Russia and throughout the U.S.A., becoming both 2X National Champion and World Champion. Your instructor will be the most important decision you make in regards to your Karate. Do not take it lightly or base it on superficial things such as distance from your home. Sensei may be part of your life or your child’s life for years to come it’s worth the extra five minute drive. Remember the most important thing is how good the instructor can make you, not how good they are. You need a Sensei not a bodyguard. “the test of a good teacher is not how many questions he can ask his students that they will answer readily, but how many questions he will inspire them to ask him which he finds difficult to answer” href=http://shotokankarateofoc.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/DSCF0930.jpg                                                                     >

What do I need to start? Not much. Always best to call first (949 292-1097) and let Sensei know you are coming. Everyone is welcome to watch a class or several. First class may be attended at no cost to see if Karate is for you. Just wear comfortable clothing and try and be at the Dojo 15 minutes early. Very little is expected of beginners. Everyone progresses at a different rate and you should not feel as though you need to keep up or compete with any of the other students. In Karate you do not get “cut” or “make the team”. It is for all people, even those who may have trouble in other organised athletic activities.
